Iran's Revolutionary Guards have threatened to crack down on any new street protests against the results of the country's presidential election. In a statement, the guards vowed to react in a "revolutionary" way to suppress unauthorised demonstrations. The Revolutionary Guards, Iran's elite security force, have close ties to the country's supreme leader. On Friday Ayatollah Ali Khamenei banned protests, prompting street violence in which at least 10 people died... In a statement posted on their website, the Guards said their troops would break up street protests and force protesters from the streets. "Be prepared for a resolution and revolutionary confrontation with the Guards, Basij [pro-government militia] and other security forces and disciplinary forces," the Associated Press news agency quoted the Guards as saying. The plain-clothed Basij militia was involved in quelling earlier protests during more than a week of demonstrations against the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad [Source: bbc.com]I have an uneasy feeling that their statement may not be intended as a cute play on their name and, quite frankly, I don’t even want to imagine what means of assaulting people would be considered “revolutionary” in a region of the world where neighboring countries feel it an acceptable form of punishment to cut someone’s gut open and pull their skin up over their head like some horrific, Hellraiser-style backwards atomic wedgie.
